Indonesia – World Class Surfing

The ocean is a playground for many. It offers such a large variety of different activities it’s easy to spend all day in its embrace. One of the most popular ocean sports is surfing. Of course it’s a lot nicer to spend the day surfing when the water is warm. Indonesia straddles the equator and enjoys warm, tropical water throughout most of its territory. This makes it one of the top surfing destinations in the world.

Catching a Wave

With 17,000 islands in the archipelago, there is always somewhere to surf. Islands such as Bali and Sumatra are well known meccas of the surfing community. However, there are many less well known surfing destinations in the country. Several of these surfing spots are perfect destinations for our guests who love to surf. The beautiful thing about surfing in Indonesia is that a surfing trip can be combined with a variety of other activities.

Raja Ampat

Raja Ampat is one of the most diverse areas of Indonesia. The large island of Waigeo protects the south from the swell of the Pacific ocean. These southern regions are perfect for diving, snorkeling, and kayaking. However, there is not a lot in the south to interest the avid surfer. But surfers shouldn’t despair! The north coast of Waigeo offers a world class surf break. What more could you ask for in a trip? Enjoy the beautiful karst landscape and amazing marine life of the southern area combined with surfing in the north. Samata visits the Raja Ampat often and is the perfect destination for a family trip of a lifetime.

Halmahera

Similar to Raja Ampat, Halmahera is the perfect combination destination for diving, cultural attractions, and surfing. With hundreds of islands in the area, there is a large variety of activities throughout the region. The northern areas, including Morotai, boast incredible surf. The best thing about Halmahera is the lack of other surfers. No one enjoys sharing the break with dozens of people, therefore, cruising remote areas is a serious advantage. Spending 10 days exploring Morotai on your own private luxury charter vessel is the ultimate way to enjoy Indonesia’s amazing surf.

Sumbawa and Rote

The southern regions of Indonesia border the Indian Ocean. This vast region ranges from West Java to Timor and all the islands in between. During certain times of year the islands of Sumbawa and Rote are two of the best surf spots in the country. The large swells coming in from the south create perfect conditions along these remote coasts. This means wonderful surfing opportunities for those lucky enough to venture to these more out of the way locations. Although the surfing opportunities are wonderful, the cruising opportunities are somewhat limited due to conditions which make it difficult for large ships.

Bali

Bali is well known by surfers everywhere. The variety of waves found throughout the southern reaches of the island ranges from beginner sets to expert level only. Bali is also one of the best places to fly in or out of the country. Spending a week exploring Bali before boarding the Samata is a popular choice of many of our guests. The opportunity to surf the waves of Bali is only one of the many enticing adventures on the island.

The south coast, locally known as “The Bukit”, is one of the best places to stay. Luxury hotels abound in this less crowded area of the island. It’s also where Bali meets the Indian Ocean and the swell rolls in. Top class surf breaks such as Uluwatu and Green Bowl dot the south coast while Keramas and Nusa Lembongan lie further afield. With its combination of surf, restaurants, and culture we believe Bali is the perfect place to fly in and out of Indonesia.
