Ever since the 1960s Bali has had a pull on surfers. Introduced by Australians, surfing soon became the number one activity for tourists. Enthusiasts from Europe, North and South America, and Asia all flock to south Bali to taste the flavor of the local water. Balinese surfers are also well known in the world of professional surf as they have grown up on the waves. Surfing is fun for all ages and the waves range from beginner waves to giants. It doesn’t matter what your level is, surfing is a great activity for anyone visiting Bali.

For those looking to step it up a notch, white water rafting is a great activity for the whole family. The mountainous areas of Bali, near Ubud and Kintamani, are home to rivers with an abundance of water. The majority of the operators are open year round, however, there is more water during the rainy season. The more water there is, the more exciting the ride! This is an activity that is fun for the whole family and allows to explore areas of Bali not regularly visited. The adventure itself is a half day event so allows for a great morning of fun and the rest of the day to chill out on the beach.

For those who are after a bit more relaxation, golf is a great way to spend the day. There are three full professional courses in Bali plus a Par 3 course. The oldest course is a forested track nestled in the hills of the Bedugul area, Handara Resort is a classic. At 1500 meters in altitude, this course offers cool, refreshing weather. The course sprawls under high volcanic mountains and offers a real challenge. There are two courses on the south coast, New Kuta and Bali National. New Kuta offers a a beautiful view of the west coast cliffs and a links inspired track. Bali National is the crown jewel of Bali golfing, this par 72 was redesigned in 2014 and offers a challenge to anyone. The beautifully manicured course lies at the heart of the Nusa Dua area.

Not for the feint of heart! Canyoning is a relatively new adventure that can be enjoyed by the whole family. However, if not comfortable with heights then it may not be the best activity. It involves trekking through the river gorges of Bali, jumping off cliffs, and repelling down rock faces. This is a full day adventure in the mountains around Bedugul. Surprisingly enough the waters of the mountains are quite cool, wetsuits are provided for the fun. Canyoning is a great way to spend the day exploring a whole new side of Bali.

There is a seemingly endless supply of hiking trails across the island. From trekking up a 3000m volcano to traipsing through rice fields, there is a hike for every occasion. Areas such as Ubud and Sidemen nestle in the foothills and boast incredible trails that lead through rice fields and into cozy local communities full of friendly people. For the more adventurous sort a morning hike up Mt Batur volcano or the neighboring Abang peak offer a good challenge.

For those who are truly fit then the largest peak on the island offers the biggest challenge. At over 3100 metres in height, Agung is a true mountain peak. Although located in the warm tropics, the temperature at the top ranges between 2-10 C, bring a jacket! Most people do the overnight option and camp on the slope before heading to the summit for sunrise. However, it can also be done in one night if camping is not of interest.

Cycling

The best way to explore as much of Bali as possible. There are so many ways to cycle on the island from road rides to off road to true down hill adventure. The best rides are done with a guide from any number of specialist mountain bike tour companies. They offer everything from half day to multiple day treks across the island. Modern equipment and top notch guides are always available. Of course they will query the experience of guests and choose suitable tracks for the day. Biking in Bali is really an adventure that everyone should enjoy.
